As METS is currently set up, only the attributes declared for the <div>
element in the METS schema can be used. There has been some discussion
about allowing any attribute from other namespaces to be used in
conjunction with METS elements--and this was proposed as a possible
revision when version 1.9 of the schema was discussed. (See the METS
wiki:
http://www.socialtext.net/mim-2006/index.cgi?cr_1_9_allow_any_attribute_from_other_namespaces_on_mets_elements).
However the proposal proved very controversial, and the Board thus far
as not been willing to approve it.
