I'm sure those folks just jumped into those crevices for photo ops' and couldn't get out fast enough once the picture was taken!
When the Loma Prieta quake hit, I was working construction renovating a beautiful old Victorian house in the center of Los Gatos which was hit pretty hard. For months afterwards, people would drive through town looking at the damage and taking pictures.
The house I was working on had the street side wall demoed and we were in the process of putting on new siding and upgrading some of the framing. There was scaffolding across the entire front to facilitate the work.
Even though the only earthquake damage that happened to the house was the toppling of the chimney top, folks would stop and gather the family together on the sidewalk to take a group photo.
Every once in a while they'd ask us to come down from the scaffolding to be in the picture but that got old pretty fast.
Funny, the house directly across the street had been knocked 3 feet off of it's foundation and people never took any photos of it!
Take heart Marie,.. it takes a little time but you'll get to the point where most of your memories of the event will be the odd stuff that makes a great story.
