I regularly add cartographic coordinates to geographic name authority
records, often taken from GNIS and Wikipedia. Usually the coordinates
given in those sources are different, but recently I've had several
instances where the coordinates found in both sources were the same.
The subfield $2 in authority and bibliographic field 034 is not currently
repeatable, meaning that if you wish to record identical coordinates from
two sources, you have to repeat the 034 field. The MARC authority format
specifically says "If different sources are recorded, separate fields
should be used."
Two questions:
Is there a good reason to record in separate 034 fields the same
coordinates from different sources?
Example:
034 ## $d W1171422 $e W1171422 $f N0474024 $g N0474024 $2 gnis
034 ## $d W1171422 $e W1171422 $f N0474024 $g N0474024 $2 wikiped
Coded coordinates for the city Spokane Valley, Washington
Is there a good reason to use just one 034 field but to make the subfield
$2 repeatable so that multiple sources that have the same coordinates
could be recorded?
Example:
034 ## $d W1171422 $e W1171422 $f N0474024 $g N0474024 $2 gnis $2 wikiped
Coded coordinates for the city Spokane Valley, Washington
