What I said was converting to a range of DISPERSED HDDs would be better, more resilient, and more easily "upgradeable" than a box of CDs that can chemically fall to pieces, be lost or scratched, and not as easily recovered. If 5% of a hard disk goes bang, and you've got it RAIDED and also copies elsewhere, it is a lot easier to recover than that one optical disc you may have. Sure you may have a copy of it, but how do you knows its integrity in real time each time.?
Of course, the home user does not have recourse as easily to multiple RAIDs... But then neither do most institutions when you factor in their collection :(
Even backing up HDDs to something like LTOx is better and more proven archive wise.
