I have been on this listserv for awhile now, but have never submitted a
request for help in tracking down something until now. In 1939, there
was a sort of World's Fair called the Golden Gate International
Exposition. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival Association took our
production of The Taming of the Shrew to this event which was held on
Treasure Island in San Francisco. They did a performance at the Federal
Theatre and the play also aired on a nationwide broadcast on NBC Radio
on July 9, 1939 which was proclaimed Ashland Day at the Fair. The
nationwide broadcast was a cut version, not the full show that played in
the theatre. There was apparently a Western States broadcast also, but
I don't know whether that aired the same day.
I recall hearing that there might have been a wire recording of the
broadcast, but I am not sure. If anyone knows anything about the
possible whereabouts or if a recording still exists, I would be most
happy to receive some information about.
Thanks so much.
