However, I very sincerely hope that we keep the terms "expression" and
"manifestation" limited to behind-the-scenes use. The CONCEPTS are integral
to the FRBR model, but the TERMS themselves have no place in a public
catalog. They are only arbitrary terms chosen by the writers of FRBR to
communicate the model to information professionals.
That is why I particularly object to using the Appendix J relationship
designators "as is" in 76X-78X $i, or as display constants to be
system-supplied. The purpose of "work", "expression", and "manifestation"
in the relationship designators in Appendix J is to identify the specific
Group 1 entity involved in the relationship. The user needn't see that term
in the display of that relationship; it is enough, and much better, to see
simply:
Based on: La Bern, Arthur J. Goodbye Piccadilly, farewell Leicester
Square
and not one of these:
Based on (work): La Bern, Arthur J. Goodbye Piccadilly, farewell
Leicester Square
Based on (expression): La Bern, Arthur J. Goodbye Piccadilly,
farewell Leicester Square
