From Tom Fine: "...The only cases I know of where something is released for
download-only with no ability to buy a CD (or LP or 45-single) because none
were printed, would be very-indie self-made albums and special one-off
singles, like for instance the famous Bed Intruder song that was a YouTube
and then iTunes sensation. "

Naxos offers a line of recordings via its music library, for which no CD is available for purchase. Those recordings are dubs from commercial discs and are not available for download to US ISPs. Similarly, beginning in March, I will be offering, via Naxos, a new line of restored broadcast recordings...also not available for download in the US. No CD will be available for purchase.
I also believe that DG may have already issued some recordings which are only available as downloads. I also know that Naxos has plans to issue some recordings as downloads first. There was a series of recordings planned for the Detroit Symphony, music of John Williams. They planned to issue the performances as downloads and then as the series was complete, issue a CD. Of course, with the situation in Detroit, that project is pending.
