Thank you to all who have contributed to this thread (and, possibly those who answer later).  It's been quite illuminating and based on what I've gleaned, I should be able to make a basic digital copy, at least one that may be good enough for transcription.  After that, it sounds like there are other very viable options.



I've been monitoring this list for two years and often feel completely ignorant when it comes to many of the exceptionally technical discussions.  However, the value of this listserv is such that continue to read and learn.  My job is to manage our collection of nearly 5,000 oral histories that span 140 years of collective memory of Southern California and the Southwest.  Trust me, while I'm one of the many who hang out in lurkdom, a good number of posts have helped me become a better preservationist as far as audio recordings are concerned.



And, tangential to part of this thread, back in the early 1970s, we conducted over 200 oral histories as a bibliographic oral history project of Richard Nixon (before he entered public office), so, I'll include the mention of the Nixon Whitehouse tapes with the project.
