Hi Melissa,
Things you should look into:
- "The Audiophile's Technical Guide to 78 RPM, Transcription &
Microgroove Recordings" by James R. Powell, Jr.
- "Broadcast Transcription Discs" by James R. Powell, Jr.
- IASA's TC-04: http://www.iasa-web.org/tc04/audio-preservation
- The Audio Engineering Society also has two volumes compiling
articles on disc playback:
http://www.aes.org/publications/anthologies/
You can look into Bobby Owinski's book "The Mastering Engineer's
Handbook". It's only marginally related to transcription discs, but
it's an easy read and has some good pictures showing what goes on with
a lacquer when it's cut.
Also, I'm sure you've seen it if you've been doing internet searches,
but I'm going to plug myself for a second:
Lacquer Disc Preservation at the Hoover Institution Archives:
http://www.hoover.org/multimedia/slide-shows/28468
I hope this helps.
