You may be asking rhetorical questions in today's times, but I'd answer, "any large corporation
phasing out a tiny part of their business."
My bet is that Panasonic (and Sony and other Japanese manufacturers) are moving away from anything
with moving parts. They can outsource DVD and Bluray players to Chinese contract-manufacturers and
sell them cheap with little or no warranty. I don't think either company has made mass-market CD
players for quite some time.
