One thing I remember was them starting a parallel independently distributed label around 1967 and being told this transition was partly to get out from under their union contracts.

Thanks for the citation. There is a tendency not to trust Wikipedia here, but I find for things I know something about it generally matches pretty well, so thanks for the endorsement. It is a long and convoluted story -- so long and convoluted, I'm wondering if Decca was the label to release "I am my own Grandpa" <smile>.
