Hi Elizabeth,,
Yes, the guidelines do say:
"When it is clear that the physical custodian does not provide intellectual access, use <physloc> to identify the custodian and <repository> to designate the intellectual caretaker." Which is not quite right, as they are the physical custodian, but I think it would do.
The only thing with that is that <physloc> is for:
"Information identifying the place where the described materials are stored, such as the name or number of the building, room, stack, shelf, or other tangible area." So we didn't interpret that as the reading room where you actually look at the material.
So maybe they need to think not about the reading room, but just about identifying the physical location store being x or y, and therefore by implication the reading room is x or y reading room. So, in that case <physloc> would be OK.
Thanks,
Jane.

This is because they have two separate sites, with some archives at one and some at another, but they are both part of the same repository. I don't think there is anything within EAD that answers this type of need. I wonder if this should be part of an EAD description, but for them, it is important that when a researcher finds a description, they can clearly see where they have to go to access the archive. I think they often end up going to the wrong library, and not being very pleased when told that it's actually in another library a few miles away.
