The real problem with music is that success at  performing music live used
to act as the gatekeeper to the recording studio. Affordable live music (to
the performer and/or the audience) has gone away.

It's probably far more a quality issue than a quantity issue but a lot of
people really don't want to face up to that possibility. The flood of new
recordings has most likely just raised the bar for quality.
