Does it have to be down in the inventory? What about letting the text in
<sponsor> reflect what item(s) they sponsored? E.g, "Digitization of scrapbooks
(see Box xx) funded by a grant from NHPRC" ? It's more visible on the title
page anyway, which is maybe why it's restricted to that location.
If it's really important to have the acknowledgment down in the inventory, odd
seems reasonable. Or what about using <altformavail> in the c0# that describes
the original (physical) item? You could include the sponsor information in the
text of the <altformavail>, e.g. "High-resolution digital images available,
sponsored by a grant from NHPRC" or whatever.
