I still believe that modern "stereo: turntables, with their
minimal tracking
weight (c. 1 gram) do NOT play 78's that well...reproducing

I have some Russcos too (once even had a chance to chat with Mr. Russ
himself) but the turntable platter resonates like a bell and they are
not variable speed which is the minimal requirement for playing 78s.
If you are able to track with a Stanton 500 at 10 grams, there is no
reason why an SME or other modern arm could not also use heavier
forces. Steve, we do not track 78s at one gram. But there might be
something to say about the heavier mass of the GE tone arm.
