It has been very distressing to watch the drastic rise in airfares over the last two weeks (especially since I haven't purchased my ticket yet).  At the moment there are some excellent fares, at least from the Midwest, on USAir flying into Long Beach Municipal (LGB) airport.   Transportation from LGB to the hotel is fairly straightforward and involves taking a cab (ca. $14) to the Wardlow Metro station where you can catch a blue line train directly to the 7th Street station across from the hotel: http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/maps/images/rail_map.pdf.   From IND, this brings the cost from $468 to $301!
