Question about the ELP playback -- does the laser pick up any mechanical noises like rumble or
resonances?

The ones I have seen used on eBay are still like $4000-5000,still kind of pricey for an individual.

Well, that’s relative. The older (clearance) models are the “cheap” ones.
The newer ones are as expensive or more so than the original line.
Looking forward to hearing one of the new ones...someday...
The older ones, with proper cleaning and EQ are pretty remarkable. I
posted a CD vs. LP demo a while back which garnered some interesting
comments.
