There were definitely public relations pieces from Sony at the time telling
the Beethoven's Ninth story. This is really a perfect example of how what
starts life as an entertainment industry PR piece can evolve into being
considered a "fact" when it wasn't actually true at all. PR people make
stuff up all the time in order to get something printed about their clients.
Their clients rarely, if ever correct the record because their livelihood
depends on getting press coverage. Of the events I've personally witnessed,
very few have ever been reported accurately. I've asked others about their
experiences of show business reporting. They consistently describe having
the very same experience of almost nothing in print about something they
actually know about ever being true.
The AES and SMPTE did a research project to determine absolute minimum
requirements for transparency in order to create a standard for production
equipment compatibility. They came back with 20 bit recording at 48kHz. as
the absolute minimum. This was documented, peer-reviewed, double-blind
tested, the whole bit. It's amazing how today some people will try to claim
that 44.1x16 is transparent.
