I have been transferring a number of reels of both 176 and 177 dating
from the early 1970's this past week. Other than requiring cleaning and
re-packing, they have run fine. Sometimes its necessary raise the
humidity a bit during transfer to overcome static problems, but usually
only in wintertime.
I _have_ noticed that the quality of the slitting varies, but so far has
not caused an issue with playback or excessive oxide shedding. As
everyone knows, the Ampex production seconds marketed under Shamrock
could be abysmal. I have never run into this with 176 or 177.
Don't even get me started on DAK tapes.....
