What had collapsed was radio airplay that actually reflected local record
sales. Madison Avenue had replaced research from calling up local record
stores with the consumer opinion polling that national advertisers wanted.
MTV was a desperate attempt on the part of Warner Brothers to find a way to
expose new artists since opinion polling had made radio play impossible for
anything "different." I'd say that MTV reflected that collapse more than
creating it.
