is that it is very like the UDO-systems pioneered by Plasmon
(www.plasmon.com). They used a grid of platinum that was deformed by the
focused heat of the writing head, and the format was the CD format, which is
now called the DVD format.

I saw it in Cambridge, UK in 1987, and that indicates that any patents that
Plasmon may have had on the basic principles will have expired. Among the
archives that use this system are RAI (Italian broadcasting) and the Ordnance
Survey (the UK official mapping company).

However, there is also a toughened glass DVD available from ex-Thomson people
in Germany.

Hence the sound idea that we do not really want to migrate is still around.
