There was a practical reason for my inquiry.

I'm about to install a RCA 45 player in the "45 Corner" of the shop.

I'm leaning toward putting in a cartridge with a .5 mil point. That should
protect the .5 mil grooves from being damaged by the device's usual 1 mil
stylus and allow ok if not ideal sound from the older records. It will also
cancel all vertical noise.

Additional data on this issue would be welcomed.

Originally 45s were mono, cut with a one mil groove. All vertical signal
was noise.
 
At some point (no pun intended- well, maybe) it matched that of the stereo
LP, even when the signal was mono, i.e., .5 mils.
 
When did this happen?
 
I'm not discussing EPs, stereo 45s, etc., just your nommal, get the biuck
out of the teenager's pocket 45.
