From Tom Fine: " ...What is it about Firewire cables and connectors that you
find to be "dodgy"? I thought Firewire was the more reliable interface for
constant-stream data like digital audio and video, that USB was designed
more for bursts of data like moving files between hard drives or emptying
photos off a camera or sending a document to a printer..."
My experience has been that firewire works well when it works but
intermittent cables are very common and you need to be careful that a Texas
Instruments chipset is always used and even they can be very picky about
drivers. FW-400 hardware has also been much more reliable for me than FW-800
or mixing speeds.
USB-1 is indeed a train-wreck for audio. USB-2, on the other hand, can be
very reliable and USB-3 will probably take over as computer manufacturers
adopt it. I expect that as solid state storage replaces mechanical we are
likely to see computers supporting expansion cards go the way of floppy
disks and CRT monitors. Unless I absolutely had to have a new interface, I'd
hold off for what will undoubtedly be a new generation that obsoletes most
of the current ones over the next year or so.
