Thomas Edison once manufactured phonographs and phonograph records in an
expansive industrial complex known as the Edison Phonograph Works, located
next to the Edison Laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. Today, the
Laboratory survives, but the last of Phonograph Works structures were
demolished in 1974.
In this 30 minute illustrated talk, a Museum Curator will trace the
history of the Phonograph Works from its beginnings in 1888, through the
heyday of the Edison Phonograph at the turn of the century, to the last
Edison Voicewriter dictation machines made in the 1960s. Following the
talk, visitors can join a brief walking tour to see where the buildings
once stood.
Admission to the park is $7, children under 16 free. For more
information, call 973-736-0550 ext.89.
