"...they are asking others to independently verify the measurements
before claiming an actual discovery."
Well, claiming a discovery is what they're doing, isn't it?
Independent confirmation is the name of the game, right? Someone else
did the math: if neutrinos in fact went that much faster than light,
then the neutrino burst from SN1987a would have arrived in 1983. I
don't know if we'd have noticed it, or if we'd have correlated it with
SN1987a if we had.
So what's going on here is not "neutrinos may be going faster than
light." What's going on is "the neutrino signal from this particular
experiment arrives 60 nanoseconds (+/- 10 nanoseconds) sooner than
expected." I suppose that some feature of this experiment could be
producing a new flavor of neutrinos - magic neutrinos - but I bet
we'll find something else, and it will be perfectly mundane.
As far as executions are concerned, I find them generally repugnant,
even when the drumbeat of innocence isn't as insistent as it was for
Troy Davis. (If he was innocent, he won't hardly have been the first
innocent person to be executed.) It's time the USA joined the
civilized world and abolished them. Again (as I'm fond of pointing
out).
