Reading about ultra-short pulse TW lasers reminded me of a story I
read many years ago. The view-point character is working as a
government inspector, and he's discovered that various manufacturers
are making strange things that he doesn't know what they're for. But
he manages to collect samples from all of the manufacturers and finds
that they fit together to make a death ray gun.
Does anyone else remember reading that story, what its title was, or
who the author was? It seems to me it was an older story, probably
from the fifties, or at most the sixties.
