When I was working at 20th Century Fox on the "Paper Chase" series, I had just begun using a newly developed off line system supplied by the Consolidated Film Industries video department, and on one of the episodes I used a temp track for the opening sequence.  It was easier to do than with 35mm where I would have had to go into a screening room that had multiple sound dummies to run a separate temp track, but now I was using 3/4" off line decks which had two audio channels plus a timecode channel.  The producers loved the cut, so the series composer had to re-record it on the scoring stage.  Later, he appeared in the doorway of my cutting room, and soundly (no pun untended) chewed me out and told me not to do it again.  Fortunately for him, I didn't have any further inspirations and the producers continued to like my work, and of course, I didn't mention the encounter to them. He must have been new to this use by editors, since it was done on
occasion as editor's help in "selling a cut" to the producers and directors.

Clark --

What you might have heard was a temporary music track.  During the
editing process, the editor and director might use "needle drops" on
the workprint to establish the rhythm and flow of scenes before the
scoring takes place.

If I'm not mistaken, the preview print of "Gone With the Wind" - the
one that Selznick trimmed before the actual premiere - used
pre-existing music cues, for example.
