On a related note --

I saw Dragonslayer just after it opened in Boston, and with a
Mahler-knowledgeable buddy who confirms this story. The music track was a
total rip from the Mahler Sixth! Bleeding chunks, one might even say... and
they suited the movie just fine. Afterwards when I read how much Harry
Pearson, the persnickety editor of The Absolute Sound, admired that
soundtrack I marveled that he failed to recognize it. The only conceivable
explanation was that he was less versed in classical music than he let on.

Years later I watched the laserdisc... and the music was totally different,
and not as good either. So I was left with the singular conclusion that the
M6 had to have been the working track and that it slipped somehow into a
distribution print. Maybe just for Boston!

And then, the highly entertaining movie Educating Rita has a terrific scene
where Rita is checking out roommate ads. The occupant opens the door and
you can hear some music wafting out, and this over-the-top woman exclaims,
"That's Mahler. One simply *cannot* live without Mahler!" As we move into
the room we hear that it's the Sixth, very loud and holding at one of those
exceedingly grim passages towards the end. Rita flees.
