I had many conversations with R.D. Darrell. He told me more than once he
wrote all the reviews when Axel Johnson was incapacitated (drunk.)
His full name was Robert Donaldson Darrell (I think- no time to check). He
went by Rod. But R.O.B. is probably the first 3 letters of his first name.
There should be a tape available of his talk to ARSC from years ago.
Incidentally, he is the father of modern classical music discography, having
imagined and compiled the 1936 Gramophone Shop Encyclopedia which, together
with the later 2 editions, are the backbone of the World Encyclopedia of
