Dr. Lotz,
Between NYC and Rochester, one will pass through numerous sad, neglected,
impoverished, post-industrial shells of what once were proud, vital, wealthy
communities. It's a capsule example of what is now typical of the United
States, away from the coastal seats of power.
You could also experience some lovely and unique landscapes, charming
villages, a beautiful wine region built upon spiritually-resonant Native
American ancestral lands, and at least one official Wonder Of the World at
nearby Niagara. Toronto is only 2.5 hours farther on.
Given the time, I'd drive NYC to ROC. There are several nice alternative
routes, through the Catskill Mountains or north up the Hudson River then
west along the Erie Canal corridor, or the slower Rt 5/20. I would take a
north/west diagonal route through the Finger Lakes, but there is much to see
either way.
Best wishes,
Carl Pultz
Rochester, NY

Subject: [ARSCLIST] Travel plans for Rochester
Would it make sense to travel by road from New York? Are there any
places of tourist interest en route? Or should I fly straight from
Germany, changing planes in New York? And should I spend an extra
couple, three days before and after the conference? Any suggestions?
I need to book air transport fairly soon to get fair rates..
Thanks
Rainer
