In the early 80's, Ampex (maker of both machines and tape) was really pushing the 1/2" 2-track
ATR-100's. I heard a side-by-side of a 30IPS 1/2" 2-track vs. a 15IPS 1/4" Dolby 2-track and it was
stunning. The Dolby sounded canned, quashed, dead and thin in comparison. 30IPS 1/4" Dolby 2-track
sounded slightly better but not good top end. 15IPS 1/2" 2-track with no NR sounded better than
either Dolby, there may have been a little bit more hiss but it wasn't noticed because the top end
was so much better and stuff like snare hits were punchier. Alas, the one thing guaranteed is that
the 456 reels used for these demos turned to a pile of sticky goo at some point soon thereafter.

Tom you're 100% correct. The use of LN tape formulas, higher speed and lower track count were much
more intelligent solutions though they were concomitantly more expensive as well.
I can tell you from experience that the SR technology blew all the other Dolby (Dubly) processes
away completely. I used it just as the ADAT revolution began and it was astounding how quiet and
transparent it was. If it had not come about at the exact moment of low cost digital multiple-tracks
it was poised to be a revolutionary leap. I still have my SR unit and man that sucker is out of this
world.
