While that may be so (at least for some ears), "sounds a bit like X" is
not a sufficient reason to promote X as a basis for the issue at hand.
Before embarking on a potentially aduous voyage to implementation of X
in a different context, there needs to be some further investigation.
In this case, one might look at the experience with version control
for metadata in the MyCoRe document repository system:
http://www.mycore.de
It has metadata versioning in its version 2.1 (2011), using IFS2. I
find no discussion or reporting about pros and cons of it, but
certainly the developers will be glad to answer questions, like what
it takes to implement the technology. The amount of metadata in these
systems is typically not much beyond several thousand records. Which
means, not really an enormous amount of traffic.
