Mac computers also have digital in/out on minijacks that also can be analog in/out.
I send an optical SPDIF from my Pro Tools interface to a Mac Mini for analysis software and levels readout. I also have that last Sony minidisc portable, with digital out and USB. It was very handy for about two months until the zoom-type recorders came out... Recorded just about an a hour and a half of 16 bit 44.1 audio, or about 50 hours compressed..
