Looking forward to reading Richard Hess's remarks. I believe he has had
luck with "cold play." Put the machine out on the porch on a cold day and
try the tape that way. Or put it in the fridge, if there's room.
Reversal in the digital domain requires no dither. Speed change with pitch
change - not always - has to be the pitch change which is automatically
caused by reclocking at the wrong stated rate. But pitch change that is
"bespoke," almost always requires dither - unless you are quite lucky,
indeed.
