Hello, Doug,

you wrote about a number of books that have been compulsory and expensive
items for anybody seriously interested in 78 rpm classical records, in
particular singing. However, I would think that most older ARSC members in
that category already have copies, copiously annotated. All the historical
discographical information that in these books go back to when it was
collected - ca. 1965-75 - has been completed and is now available from the
last member of the team that created the Voices of the Past series, Alan
Kelly, as Word files on CD-Rs. I knew Eric Hughes (deceased, alas) and Alan
Kelly - namedropping as is the custom here.

This makes Hurst's book the only book of lasting interest, as a testament to
record collecting ca. 1950 (yes, I know it is the second edition; so more
recent). But then Boris Semeonoff would appear to be more systematic.

Do young collectors have these books? Old collectors take an awfully long
time to die, so only few copies get on the market. But do they read books?

I would consider other ephemera, such as record catalogue supplements, worth
a good deal more per page than these books that were in print for a long
time.
