Hello,

How will the funnel groups be affected or involved regarding the Day 1 Naco RDA authority training?

I am pleased to announce the formation of several PCC RDA task groups. The=
se groups report to the PCC Policy Committee; the full charge for each is p=
osted on the PCC RDA web site at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/RDA-PCC.html=
.

1) The RDA Policy Statements Task Group, which is a joint task group w=
ith the LC Policy & Standards Division. This group is charged to review th=
e latest set of RDA Policy Statements and to make recommendations indicatin=
g the extent to which use of a single set of RDA Policy Statements is agree=
able. The group is chaired by Manon Theroux, and includes David Reser, Pau=
l Frank, Linda Gabel, Ed Jones, Robert Maxwell, and Hugh Taylor.

2) The Task Group to Formulate or Recommend PCC/NACO RDA Policy on Aut=
hority Issues is charged to formulate or recommend PCC policy on the priori=
tized NACO issues raised in the PCC RDA-Decisions Needed Task Group Final r=
eport/spreadsheet, providing clear direction on each issue and noting any c=
ontingencies in policy implementation. The group is chaired by Kathy Glenna=
n, and includes Ben Abrahamse, Karen Detling, Joanna Dyla, Sara Shatford La=
yne, George Prager, and Paul Frank.

3) The PCC Acceptable Headings Implementation Task Group is charged to=
implement the recommendations of the Task Group on AACR2 & RDA Acceptable =
Heading Categories. The group is chaired by Gary Strawn, and includes Paul=
Frank, Robert Bremer, Karen Anderson, Ana Lupe Cristan, and David Williams=
on.

4) The Hybrid Integrating Resources Task Group is charged to produce a=
guide or cue sheet that will assist with the cataloging of integrating res=
ources under RDA. The group is chaired by George Prager, and includes Rene=
e Chin, Dale Swensen, Laura Ramsey, Les Hawkins, Margaretta Yarborough, Hol=
ly Tomren, Lynne Branche Brown and Valerie Bross.

Several other task groups which report to PCC Standing Committees are also =
underway, and the charges to these groups are posted on the Standing Commit=
tee sites.

5) The RDA Provider-Neutral Model and Reproductions Task Group is char=
ged to examine the provider-neutral model under RDA and make recommendation=
s for any needed changes. The group reports to the Standing Committee on S=
tandards and is chaired by Becky Culbertson; members include Chris Cronin, =
Christee Pascale, and David Reser.

6) The RDA and the BIBCO Standard Record for Textual Monographs Task G=
roup is charged to examine the BIBCO Standard Record MAPs and make recommen=
dations for any needed changes. The group reports to the Standing Committe=
e on Standards and is chaired by Chris Cronin; members include Robert Maxwe=
ll, Christee Pascale, David Reser, and Becky Culbertson.

7) The RDA Training Materials Task Group is charged to collect existin=
g RDA training documentation from PCC and non-PCC sources, review them for =
accuracy, and organize and post them to the PCC RDA site for easy navigabil=
ity. The group reports to the Standing Committee on Training, and is chair=
ed by Larisa Walsh; members include Robert Maxwell, Hien Nguyen, Susan Summ=
er, and Amy Turner.

8) The RDA Records Task Group is charged to collect examples of comple=
te MARC RDA bibliographic records for monographic, serial, and integrating =
resources representing all formats of material, review those records for co=
mpleteness and accuracy, and then post them on the PCC website. The group =
reports to the Standing Committee on Training, and is chaired by George Pra=
ger; members include Nancy Lorimer, Christee Pascale, and Robert Rendall.

These eight groups are working now. Their reports are expected later this =
Spring for discussion at the PCC Operations Committee meeting in early May.

The report of the CONSER Standard Record Task Group, which was co-chaired b=
y Kristan Lindlan and Ed Jones, and included members Everett Allgood, Rober=
t Bremer, Valerie Bross, Renee Martonik, Robert Rendall, Regina Reynolds, S=
teve Shadle, and Dale Swensen, was discussed at the CONSER-at-large meeting=
at ALA Midwinter and will soon be reviewed by the PCC Policy Committee.

The report of the Authority Source Citation Task Group, which was chaired b=
y Gary Strawn and included John Wright, David Williamson, Robert Bremer, St=
ephen Hearn, and Karen Anderson, has been received and is being reviewed by=
 the PCC Policy Committee.

The PCC Secretariat has created a consolidated table, Status of PCC RDA Tas=
k Groups, at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/RDA-PCC.html, which is very usef=
ul for one-stop viewing. The table has the status and deadlines for each g=
roup, and the charges are linked there as well.

The RDA Post-Implementation Guidelines Task Group and the PCC Essential Ele=
ments Task Group are still in the process of being formed; more information=
on these will be forthcoming. Will this be the end of PCC RDA task groups=
? Probably not.

Let me take this opportunity to thank the many people who are hard at work =
on these, and earlier, PCC RDA task groups. It clearly takes a village to =
think through the many aspects of implementing a new descriptive cataloging=
standard, and I am grateful for the willingness of so many PCC members to =
spend their brain power working on this. -- Linda

True enough--I suppose the matter is settled. For example, American heritag=
e dictionary gives "cm", without a period, Wikipedia (that fount of all kno=
wledge) has: A centimetre (American spelling: centimeter, symbol cm), and T=
he Chicago manual of style (14th ed., at least) gives metric abbreviations =
without periods, all of which I confess not to have known. But let's face =
it, it has been spelled cm. since the beginning of the card catalog era--th=
ough one could argue that this is simply closing punctuation--so let's not =
malign those who think of it as an abbreviation. (If it quacks like a duck=
 ...) =20
IMO, this seems like a silly thing to argue about anyway, since most A=
merican catalog users don't really know what centimeters are anyway, and if=
we really wanted to be user friendly we'd be better off using inches, give=
n that the U.S. is unlikely to switch to the metric system anytime soon. I=
f it has to be "cm" so be it. We can live with that, and implementing RDA =
will have far bigger challenges in store than that.

Better to teach catalogers to adhere to the standard, which rightfully reco=
gnizes that cm is an internationally agreed upon metric symbol which does n=
ot include a period. The standard spells out the content of the data to be=
included. To record the value cm with a period is wrong. RDA does not re=
quire ISBD punctuation, which is really the issue here. In my mind it is b=
etter to forget to input a period after cm when there is a 490 present than=
to always input an incorrect period after the metric symbol.
