Ummm, yes.
I was one of the listeners who could reliably tell the difference (at
the time). It was much easier to tell the difference in bit depth in a
studio control room than it was in a screening room with the speakers
behind a perforated screen. The percentage of test subjects who could
tell the difference was better than 75% as I remember but the
participants were all industry professionals with trained ears so it
wasn't a fair cross section of the public.
