FWIW, although my record purchasing has been pretty constricted
in the aughts compared to prior decades, all the records of new music
I've bought in recent years on labels large (Columbia) and small (Drag
City) have been on black vinyl. I don't buy vinyl reissues, though. I was
also buying a lot of records around the turn of the 1970s to 80s, and
part of the resurgence of colored vinyl then was tied in with the newer
music on small labels like Stiff in the UK and a general atmosphere of
greater interest in the record as object - in the subculture when it was
still sub it was far cooler to seek out and buy a small 45 rpm release
with a picture sleeve and perhaps on colored wax than it was to get
another boring major label corporate project.
