It's worth noting that this is exactly how stereo began.

It was not a product of the recording or consumer electronics industries. I
believe this lack of grass roots development is precisely why quad and its
later incarnation, 5.1 were utter failures. Nobody could be bothered with
that pesky little problem of actually learning how to do it by starting at
the beginning.

From High Fidelity Magazine, April 1966. "How It All Began," chronicles 15
years of gear and hi-fi news/trends. The guy whose 1951 playback system is
pictured was obviously not married at the time! 
That setup has a WAF of ZERO.
