I think it's pretty well established that rearrangement does not count as separation. Physical separation (such as storage in a map case away from the rest of the material ) also does not count as separation. If it's still part of the original collection, that's what counts.

Yes, I did read the tag description. But I was unclear on what "separated or removed" meant. Could it be separated from the original folder or from the physical location of most of the collection such as moved to a map case? Thanks for you take on it. The removed part to a different collection such as the library book collections is straight forward. The difficult part is the moving from one folder associated with a specific artist to another location within the collection but in a different series with mixed artist material.

So for example if the exhibit catalogs are transferred to a different part of your institution, those would be considered separate material. If during processing materials are simply shifted from one series to another, that would not be considered separation.

There are also posters and large fliers that are going to be put into the" posters and large fliers" section in the art historians archives but move from the original artist folder and research series into a different series in the same collection. I am uncertain about using this tag (<separatedmaterial>) to note that the materials have been moved. Does anybody have any ideas on this?
