Dear MODS community,
The MODS/MADS Editorial Committee is exploring how we might allow MODS to
distinguish publishers, distributors, and other publisher-like entities,
driven by this request on the MODS list:
http://listserv.loc.gov/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1112&L=mods&T=0&P=337. We're
currently working on MODS 3.5, which as an incremental release must be
backwards compatible with the previous incremental version, which rules
out restructuring <originInfo> (at least in this version). Making changes
to <originInfo> gets complicated since several different types of elements
are wrapped within it.
We're currently examining two different approaches. (1) adding an
attribute (@originRole or similar) to <originInfo>, or (2) adding an
attribute (@role or similar) to selected subelements of <originInfo>, such
as <place> and <publisher>. Examples of these options, along with a bit of
discussion, can be found at:
http://mods.pbworks.com/w/page/50638392/define%20%40role%20under%20originIn
fo%20to%20indicate%20production%2C%20publication%2C%20distribution%2C%20man
ufacture
(or http://bit.ly/Jk5Fsh)
We're interested in getting feedback on which of these two options for
MODS 3.5 you'd prefer. Would your workflows work better on repeated
<originInfo>s or repeated subelements within <originInfo>? If you repeated
<originInfo>, what would your preferred practice for handling the
originInfo subelements not related to publication be?
Thank you for your thoughts!
Jenn
