Follow with great interest discussions among engineering pros on the list. Not being a technical whiz, more a musician, still working hard to educate myself on sound quality issues, which are very important to me. Reading, listening and studying, but have many miles to go.
Listening is a serious experience, I don't do other things while music is playing. My questions to Tom Fine and others involve Apple products. Had to give up LP when we moved to Hawaii many years ago, just too many boxes and too much weight. So listening is mostly through computer stored audio files and CDs. I burn files using iTunes' lossless format, archive downloaded files in FLAC format before converting them and when burning a CDR LP transfer, back it up to AIF. And yes, the hard drive is backed up regularly. I have a good CD player (Musical Fidelity), which could probably use a decent ADC unit from what I'm reading, but have to admit my laziness in being strapped to the computer.
Current equipment – MAC OS X, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, running Snow Leopard.
Okay, question 1) Should I invest in another player than Apple's (I use Toast when needing to check FLAC files and other non Apple compatibles)? 2) Would the smart thing be to upgrade the sound card that came with the unit. In each case any suggestions toward product lines would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for the opportunities to listen in to all of you and grow just a little bit.
