In "All You Need Is Ears", George Martin writes that when he joined
Parlophone in 1950, they were still using falling weights. He attributed
this to the unsteady electric power supply in the St John's Wood area of
London (which did actually plague tape recording at Abbey Road in the
1960s, according to Mark Lewisohn), whereas (in his words) gravity knew
no hiccups.
