A couple of weeks ago I pre-ordered two copies each of the vinyl and CD
versions of forthcoming release of Percy Dovetonsils. Now I know that
both Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams are gone, but Edie's son is in charge
of the Kovacs archive where the master tape was found, and he is
involved in this release. He is also working on a new DVD box set which
was supported by my buying two of the first one. The second copies of
all of these are for my daughter, Leah, and we are BUYING, not copying.


As for the comment about Crosby and Sinatra, I did buy Kathryn Crosby's
book directly from her a few years ago, and long ago bought some of
Sinatra's Reprise LPs -- remember, he originally owned that company.
The open-letter in question did not mention the aspect of copyright and
royalties that are our major concern -- the overly long term of early
sound recording copyrights. It should be mentioned to the author of the
posting that some artists have found their recordings deleted,
unavailable, and unlicensable from their original companies -- and that
this has kept some of these performers from getting royalties from sales
or from issuing and selling their own recordings.

One hand here. A couple weeks ago, I bought two CDs directly from
Omar Rodriguez Lopez (leader of WB artist The Mars Volta) from his
"solo" projects, or at least from his web site. A manager and/or an
intern were probably middle(wo)men.

In the past, I've also dug buying CDs from touring bands directly from
their van so as to get around the venue's take on merchandise revenue.

David, thanks for posting that link. I hadn't seen the NPR blog,
which I found equally interesting being an alumnus of American
University and having some experience with WVAU, AU's not-quite-radio
station (long ago the university decided the local NPR affiliate,
WAMU, should get to use its broadcasting capabilities).
