It was on sale a couple of weeks ago so I snapped up a copy.
This is a very well put-together anthology of Atlantic's jazz recordings produced by Nesuhi Ertegun
and Joel Dorn, with a few here and there produced by someone else. There's something for most tastes
in there, and I very much liked Joel Dorn's choice of sequencing for the 5 CDs. The book is
luxurious, nice printing on heavy stock and beautiful color. I like the form-factor too, not quite
LP sized but definitely not tiny-type CD booklet.
There is overlap with the Dorn-produced Atlantic Jazz series of single-CD anthologies put out in the
90's, but the sound quality is better, to my ears, on this set. I don't have all the early 90's CDs,
so this fills in a lot of blanks for me. I can't say all of the music is my taste, but the
sequencing is such that rarely are two tracks I just don't like situated one after the other.
Highly recommended.
Also, by the way, for fellow multi-channel-playback fans, I notice they still have copies of the
Aretha Franklin quad audio DVD in stock. It's not true discrete-quad DVD-A, but the Dolby 4-channel
works just fine on my system. They seem to have sold out of the quad Chicago Transit Authority,
which I also enjoy very much.
