Great to hear your pragmatic thoughts on this.
After I started down the path of cold playback and began to understand
about the glass transition temperature and how degradation modes can
cause this to become lower (as a symptom of the degradation), I have
thought that Marie's technique (and those who also practised it "in the
closer" before Marie came out with it) had hit on a great combination of:
-cleaning
-cooling
-lubricating
And then it neatly evaporates!
So, I agree that cooling is a factor.
