Hello,
I am hoping someone out there can answer this MODS question. I am in the
process of looking for a new searchable system for a small media
collection. The collection includes CDs, DVDs, film, digital beta tapes,
and even some books and paperwork. It also includes many digital videos
and files containing all the elements used to create those videos. As the
collection grows it will largely by digital objects. I am currently using
a VuFind OPAC so I already have hundreds of MARC records. I'd like to
change to a METS-based MODS system but and, here (finally), is my
question. Is it inappropriate to use MODS to describe physical objects? In
an ideal world, the catalog system I use will allow for MARC records for
physical objects and MODS for digital objects, but I haven't found that
system yet. Right now I'm looking at Rutgers' Open WMS and University of
Florida's SobekCM systems. This catalog will mostly be for in-house use
but we may want to share the records at some point (we are part of USC).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!I'm learning as I go along.
