My guess is phase problems due to use of two or more mics.
The mics themselves would not need to be wired out of phase
to produce such interference effects which are due to arrival-
time differences. All the 'X' LPs are of course mono, and the
file Dave posted is mono also, so the comments about stereo
are puzzling...and the 'X' LPs were produced without any
noise removal processing, but possibly some re-equalization.
