what I do with paper tapes is place a plastic leader at the beginning and then play them only on the atr-100. I use the leader to energize the transport. After that it's constant tension so I'm usually running top to end without tears. As stated before, they are very fragile and a huge PITA but the atr is a life saver. Also, use a magnetic developer to figure out where the tracks are. The original Brush recorded in the middle of the tape but not quite full track.
