Hi Everyone -
Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free
Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures,
entitled "The Battle of Antietam" on Tuesday, September 18th from 1:00 -
1:45 pm in the Department of the Interior Library.
During the spring of 1862, President Abraham Lincoln’s Union forces
celebrated impressive battlefield victories while confident northerners
predicted the ending of hostilities by Christmas. Victory appeared so
imminent that the War Department closed recruiting stations throughout the
North. In summer, however, all Federal drives across the continent stalled
and northern frustration replaced the hope that dominated the first half of
the year.
Robert E. Lee thoroughly confused and outgeneraled his adversaries in
Virginia as he sought to capitalize on the situation by launching an even
bolder gamble—an invasion of the North with his entire army. The tables had
been turned and the survival of both the Union and the Confederacy seemed
to hang in the balance. The struggle’s outcome would be decided along the
Antietam Creek as it meandered through the fields and woods of western
Maryland on September 17, 1862—America’s bloodiest day.
Please join Park Ranger Michael Kelly as he discusses the Battle of
Antietam. Find out how the Union and Confederate armies came to meet on the
fields outside Sharpsburg, MD, the strategies of the two sides on the
battlefield, and how the battle’s eventual outcome would impact strategy
and planning for the remainder of war.
